I don't know why this is the case, but the only reason I can think of is that Apple assumes that "AirPods" is too generic and people might get confused about which AirPods they're pairing to, so they're helping you out by attaching your name to it. At least it's better than "Firstname's AirPods" which just looks silly and way too long. Is that really too much to ask?! But "Pods" will do. Not ideal, because I just want my AirPods to be called "AirPods".
